Committee Roles & Membership

The Council operates via a committee structure. There are four standing committees which meet monthly and a range of sub-committees and working groups set up to address specific issues or projects.

An Audit Committee, meeting quarterly, deals with audit plan & reports and matters relating to economy, efficiency and effectiveness of Council operation. A Consultation Committee, comprising all members of Council, has full delegated decision-making powers to deal with consultation with Planning Service on planning applications and with other consultees such as, Roads Service, Water Service and the NIHE. This committee will also receive any delegations or presentations which are not appropriate to a service committee.

It has also established a special committee with Council powers to deal with the proposed lignite development in the Bushvale area of the Borough. It meets as and when required.

The Council meets monthly to consider the recommendations of the committees. This monthly meeting also deals with sealing of documents, notices of motion. Annual Tenders and Annual Rate Estimates are also dealt with by Council.

Each of the Council’s standing committees comprises twelve members together with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor as ex-officio members.
