Street Cleansing

The Litter (Northern Ireland) Order 1994 places a duty on all district councils to ensure that all land in their direct control and to which the public have access is kept clear of litter so far as is practicable.  This includes Council property and all roads and footpaths adopted by the Department for Regional Development (DRD) Roads Service.  The service is also responsible for the emptying and cleaning of all council owned litter bins in the Borough.

In 2008/09, we spent just over £250,000 on street cleansing.

What can you do?

  • We work with communities across the Borough to encourage responsible citizenship. Research shows that if an area is clean and tidy, people will enjoy living there more.  If you want to do something about litter where you live, contact your local community group or Council.
  • We can help organise clean ups or provide talks in your area on the benefits of a clean environment.
