Fees payable (from 5 December 2005) for certificates and searches
Full certified copy of an entry of birth, death or marriage
£12.00
- Where two or more full certified copies of the same entry are applied for at the same time, the first copy will be charged at £12.00 and any additional copies at £6.00 each.
- When an applicant can supply full particulars the fee will be £6.00. The following information should be supplied - pre 1973 district, book and entry number/post 1973 reference number beginning 'u' and the year.
Short Birth Certificate

- A short certificate shows only the surname, name, sex, date of birth and (in most cases) the district of birth. Such a certificate is generally accepted for all purposes for which evidence of age only is required.
- Where an applicant can supply full particulars including the register entry number and date of registration the fee will be £6.00.
Statutory Purpose Certificate

- Proof from government department is required
Search only. For each five year period or part of it.

Index Search
£12.00
- A search of the computerised birth, death or marriage indexes for a period not exceeding six hours. Includes 4 verifications with the option of further verifications at £3.00 each.

Applications from outside the United Kingdom should have cheques and money orders made payable in £ Sterling and include return postage. Payment can also be made by Maestro/Visa/Mastercard at GRO.
