Recycling and Waste

Home Composting

Home composting is an excellent way to manage waste at home and is something every household can become involved in as a family activity.  If managed properly, there are no issues over attracting vermin or smells.

Home composting is one solution but you can also reduce the amount of food waste you generate by either purchasing less, shopping smarter or being imaginative with leftovers.  More information on this is available in ‘Reduce and Reuse…A More Sustainable Lifestyle’ on this website.

There are other alternatives available.  Some people may wish to make or purchase a wormery.  Others make a simple yet very effective version of the plastic composter.  Some examples are given here.

Composting at home is an activity the whole family can get involved in.  You can produce a good quality soil conditioner or mulch, with the satisfaction of knowing you have not used peat or peat based products.  If you require larger amounts of compost, please ask your garden centre about peat free products.  By making this choice, you are helping conserve increasingly threatened peat bogs, amazing habitats for plants and all types of wildlife.
