Community Safety

Chairman’s Foreword

Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership was established in October 2002 following the publication of “Creating a Safer Northern Ireland Through Partnership” by the Northern Ireland Office. The aim of the Partnership is to maximise the potential of all organisations so that we can each deliver our own objectives more effectively.

Our mission is:

“Through partnership to reduce the incidence of crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour within Ballymoney Borough

Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership believes that strong local government and active voluntary and community groups make a vital contribution to community safety.

We recognise that local citizens play a crucial role in keeping the community safe and that there is a need to encourage capacity building to develop strong and active voluntary and community groups. We strive to encourage local citizens to be active in helping to identify community safety priorities for their neighbourhoods and to work with key agencies to make sure they are tackled through our local action plan projects.

Partnership Members

We work in close collaboration with local partners in the setting of priorities, the development of new policies and initiatives, and the deployment of resources to bring holistic approaches to local problems and deliver what is important to local people. The Partnership comprises of a joint strategic and operational tier and a number of task specific sub-groups. Organisations involved in the partnership are from the statutory, voluntary and community sectors.

Community Safety Strategy

The Partnership has worked closely with all sectors since its formation in carrying out a number of community safety audits and consultations. The main outcomes/priorities from these have been brought together to create a three-year strategy for 2008-2011.

This document provides a framework within which members of the Community Safety Partnership will contribute to the overall objectives set out in this strategy. It identifies a number of local priorities, which are in line with the Northern Ireland Community Safety Strategy. These will help us set targets that we will work to achieve within the timeframe. We want to take reasonable steps to combat crime and anti-social behaviour all of which must contribute to reducing anxiety and the fear of crime in our community.

Ballymoney Safer Bonfire Competition Launch 2009

Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership wish to encourage organisers of traditional bonfires in the Borough to enter a Safer Bonfire Competition in 2009.

Following the success of last year’s Safer Bonfire Competition, Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership in conjunction with Ballymoney Borough Council, PSNI, Ballymoney Community Relations Committee and NIHE are to repeat this event for 2009.

The aim of the competition is to encourage organisers of traditional bonfires in the Borough to think of both safety and the environment when organising the event. As with last year, it is hoped the competition will encourage a safer, more environmentally friendly approach, which will benefit everyone.

Conclusion

Community safety is an important issue, which needs pro-active thinking and a partnership approach to be successful.

We acknowledge the need to create a relationship between the Community Safety Partnership, local government, agencies and the communities they serve which encourage accountability, trust and co-operation in delivering a collaborative approach to addressing community safety.

We believe that Ballymoney Community Safety Partnership are on the right path to making Ballymoney Borough a safer place for people to live, work and visit.
